i just bought a house from an elderly couple. the house needs work. the biggest problem is the bathroom. the elderly couple only took baths. and surrounding the bath is only wood paneling!!!! and right above the bath is a window!! it is the weirdest set up! i need to put up something to protect the wood...how much do you think it would cost and what do i do?

I would recommend one of those shower/tub kits from Lowes. They include the wall to ceiling panels.
If you do not want to cover the window, put one of those frosted glass windows in, and tile the walls. I just done a custom floor to ceiling shower that is very nice.

Home Depot carries this wall board its called Sanitex, you can use it as a back splash in the kitchen or bath or wherever theres gonna be water. It costs anywhere from $10 to $20 dollars a sheet and I think it comes in 8-10 feet sections. Use construction adhesive. It wouldn't hurt to use a vapor barrier underneath the Sanitex either. I don't know how much it costs. Get the vinyl or plastic strips to finish the edges, it'll make it look better all the way around, and use a good caulk/sealer.

I would look into the shower/tub surrounds. As far as the window... my parents have that too. My mother made curtains out of a shower curtain. They hang just a little larger than the window all around. Keeps the water out.

If you are going to take showers you will need to remove any wood and replace it. I bought a sheet of formica and just glued it on.
