car is short for carrige... you know, a horse drawn buggy.
when people say the wrong thing like that, i correct them, in as brutal a way as i can find at the moment...
this douche bag i work with always calls his jeep liberty a "truck" like "i need to turn the rotors on my truck" my response is "oh good, you sold the sad little piece of shiet jeep and bought a truck?"
or someone will ask for a ride in my car "sorry, i dont drive my car in the winter, i might pick you up in my truck if you asked"

car (n.) An automobile
vehicle (n.) A device or structure for transporting persons or things; a conveyance: a space vehicle.
Car is actually more descriptive for a passenger motorized vehicle. Vehicle could mean anything from the space shuttle to a street car.
If referring to a truck or van, they should say "nice truck" or "nice van" I suppose.
No matter what they say though, the proper response would be "Thanks."

Could be because people are lazy and some people can't tell the difference between a van and a minivan, a minivan and an SUV, and an SUV from a truck. I guess they'd rather just say something remotely close than try to think about what it should be called.

I think it's because a vehicle is a term that covers everything. A blanket term. A vehicle is anything that transports. A car is more specific to a privately owned personal and driven daily vehicle. Just as a gun covers all firearms. But with in that catagory in pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun. That's my thoughts anyway.

"Car" is left over from "carriage". To use it with a van or truck is just being lazy.

I sometimes call my car, my buggy. Sometimes it's my vehicle, and usually when I'm talking about another person's vehicle I'll use car.
I guess it's whatever one is comfortable with.
