Name of the GAME is branding! SONY, like any top brand, spends mega-bucks for brand marketing. And consumers eventually pay for it.
Take away the SONY brand from that same configuration and that laptop turns cheap. Why? It uses a pretty old chipset, the 945G. It is good up to 1066mhz fsb but board implements only 533mhz. GMA950 onboard graphics is also outdated. RAM is cheapy PC2-4200. At $2,000, the specs actually sucks.

It is a sony vaio computer, and sony laptops have always been more expensive. It is a rip-off to a certain extent, and if you don't need the sony media tools included in the laptop, you are far better off getting a HP laptop.

My sis got this for college last year. She loves it but we got it for $1,499. Plus it came with a laptop bag! I don't think even 1,499 is worth it! It broke twice and best buy wouldn't repair it because they were too busy.

Sounds ok to me! It costs a lot because it's much smaller and lightweight than other notebooks,

Nope, not a rip off..
TZ series tend to be that price.
The thing is, you will not find any other laptop that's 11.1 inches for anything lower than that.
