You can, but it just gives people (including your illegal alien you hired that you haven't paid yet to clean your gutters) an easier time to contest your will because you haven't had a (court) "good ol' boy (lawyer, in other words) involved in your will creation.
Two things to consider:
One: Go ahead and do your kit as above, but also have a lawyer look it over. Perhaps it will be much cheaper.
Two: Google "Living trust" and learn that your wishes can not be contested at all. No court is involved, and your loved one who is your executor can immediately go to your bank/stock/IRA/401K account and disperse funds so that they can be available to pay your bills (i.e. funeral) instead of waiting the unknown time for the courts to decide that the will you made from a kit (or a lawyer) is the final, most recent will and that there are no others..

I hope this helps.

Legally, you could hand-write a will on a dinner napkin. The problem is, if what you write does not mean what you want under Texas law, you won't be around to clarify your intent when it matters. A basic will costs under $100. If you need more than a basic will, you can't afford NOT to hire an attorney.

I believe you can write a will on anything by yourself as long as you have someone witness it when you sign it . It doesn't matter what state your in.

As long as you properly execute the document you're fine.
