It sets in faster with no light, during the contemplation that precedes sleep. I've always seen it since I was very young. The "splotches" of color appear large in size and navigate my vision as they wane. The green color usually appears in the place the fading purple. I can also induce these colors through a few minutes of meditation. The colors look like what you see when you look into light for a few seconds and close your eyes. You see a floating, phantom image that appears to be a mix of purple and neon green. Right? Or when you press on your eyes significantly enough to produce that "green cloud"? I get those, only they form spontaneously, collapse, and the cycle repeats. I would like to think that some physiological phenomemon is taking place and that I'm not witnessing restless spirits play an arcade game of Pong in my head. Any ideas?

I'm not certain, but I think that those are essentially the same phenomenon as what you see when you close your eyes after looking at a light; that's why it appears so similar. In the case of looking at a light, the afterimage is caused by retinal damage, but in this situation I think it's just a normal amount of spontaneous retinal stimulation. I used to see images similar to what you described; I remember the alternating purple and green images forming a sort of a letter C shape that would then close to become a doughnut. It's almost definitely nothing to be concerned about, and it sounds like you have found it useful as a meditative focus. If you are at all worried, you could certainly bring it up with your optometrist or opthamologist at your next appointment.
