Dependent on size the Dempsey will not be very friendly. As the Dempsey grows your population of A.C.and others will shrink.

An Oscar will grow out of a 40g within 6-8 months. Also, those are Central/South American Cichlids, not North! Oscars, Firemouths et al need entirely different water chemistry to the Rift Lake Africans you have, this is why Cichlid keepers recommend that these fish are NOT compatible! You know you're over stocked, adding more fish to a potential problem tank isn't going to make it look any better. Only ever stock a tank based on a fish's adult size.

I agree with soopy in the matter of different water chemistry requirements, but I've also found fish can be quite adaptable to different water needs, such as with my Arowana's which usually do better at 7.5 or under and my Africans prefer hard water at like an 8.2. South Americans really prefer even lower in the 6's so I do agree, that could be one problem. Let's assume you could get past that. The other fish you have, basically are fairly peaceful Africans, and then you run into a secondary issue which really seals this. That Dempsey is one of those cichilds that are of the mentality, "This tank is MINE" They aren't the play nice and get along types if you catch my meaning. So even if the Dempsey was conditioned properly to adapt to the higher PH, the secondary issue is going to make it not work, with compatibility. I'd agree also, if you want one, get a seperate tank and start that with South American parameters.

No! Jack Dempseys are South American Cichlids. This means they require completely different water qualities to be happy. They may get along, but the JD will be stressed because of the hard, alkaline water. Get you JD a separate tank, or don't get one at all.
