I have to make a race car from house hold items for science. I thought it'd probably be easy to carve a candle in a race car shape, but I have no idea how to carve anything. Any tips, suggestions or ideas? I have a drawing of a car I want it shaped in, but I was just wondering if I should just start slicing away with a knife or if there was anything I should know first?

This might be cheating but if you want to go the candle route why not make a mold then melt the candle into it. Find a matchbox or hotwheel car that you like and want to duplicate. Use tinfoil to get the general shape, use several sheets to make it stronger. When this is finished use cheap candles, they will melt better and then fill the mold. When you take the wax out you will most likely need to do some work to make it smoother. A very light sand paper should do the job. If you want a bigger car use a larger model. I've never tried this but it might be possible to melt candles in a pot on the stove and then carefully pour the hot wax into a mold. (use a pot that can be thrown away) After all that's more or less how candles are made anyway. Good luck and I hope this helps.

use a bar of soap it will be softer and you can copy to size the car then lay it in the bar of soap and carve away Ivory soap is best
