Is it that perhaps they are not all that bright themselves so they feel the need to criticize others?

I believe you're right. Or maybe they are just jealous of others' intelligence. Oh well, someday, they might get a life... Okay, maybe not... lol

You know for some people the insult is all they have. People generally insult people because they are insecure about themselves , their intelligence is questionable, their downright nasty, their contribution to any forum is usually worth two cents and sometimes less, or they are covering up for some character flaw and the best way for them is to insult the person thus drawing away attention from themselves and their lacking of anything to offer constructively . Constructive criticism can build up and an insult or destructive criticism destroys and causes animosity and needless heartache.

I think that you are right in what you wrote, I have had the misfortune, at a Christmas Party I attended, a known individual, came over to me, and without saying Hello, proceeded in asking me a Question. He did not even let me answer, and he was insulting me, he said I did not know the answer, I only looked at him and turn my back to him, the one that was laughed at was him.

Because they can, without reprisal from Y. It says a great deal about the individuals state of mind and self-esteem.

Because they are drowning in their own self pitty, and living a miserable life, cant stand to see others happy!!
