He shouldn't have to be present at the birth if he feels he can't handle the sight. Some people truly DO get sick or faint at the sight of blood, or very upset when someone they love is in pain. If your husband is going to freak out he will only be a burden to the doctors and nurses (or midwife) that are assisting with the birth and will end up getting in the way.

Ask him if he will be there for you during early labor and then have him come in right after the baby is born to bond.

NOBODY should be forced to do anything against their will, even if you are talking about a husband and the birth of his child. Find someone in your family or a close friend if you really feel you need extra support besides the staff.

Have a back up person to come in with you in case he doesnt change his mind.

Maybe watch the Birth story on cable with him...see if its something he can deal with. Some people (not just men) cant deal with the idea of seeing that. It's an intense experience.

dont fault him for it...but definitely prepare yourself...you are the important person in this deal....get a doula (hired professional birth assistant) or get a friend who has had children to come with you.

He may change his mind at the last minute...if he doesnt, then make sure you have someone with you.

You could get a doula to help you in labor and delivery. Honestly, my husband wasn't too excited about being there for the births and I wish I'd had a doula because he just didn't feel like he was "helping" when I just needed him near me for support. So he got bored and really wasn't a big help at all.

He can stand at your head so he can't see anything. He'll have the same view you do, which is basically nothing but thighs and belly.
The baby will be bloody and slimy, would that bother him, or is it just your part that he doesn't want to see...cause to be honest, I can see how that might ruin sex for a guy. It's a pretty crazy, surreal thing to watch.

don't worry he may get over it. my bf was the same way at first. he would always say " i don't think i am going to come in i don't think i can handle that". He did end up coming in, in fact he taped the whole thing and was so excited, he was a great coach.

If he does see the birth, he may never want to have sex again the rest of his life. Husbands (in the sane days, before "helping" with birth) were kept far away, down in the waiting room, and never had to see any of it. Maybe he knows he might get sick, or faint.
