Its not like they can DO anything. In fact, lets be blunt and honest: The Royal Family's only job is to sit there and look pretty. The fact that they provide drama for the whole country is just a bonus.

I would say that other countries lost their monarchies for two main reasons, neither of which has applied to the UK. The first reason is political revolution against the monarchy (e.g. Russia, France, USA). Britain only once experimented with government without a monarchy (after the English Civil War) but it was a shortlived experiment and the monarchy was restored.

The second major reason for other countries losing their monarchies was when they had new constitutions imposed on them after they were on the losing side in major wars. Britain has never been on the losing side in a major war and the country hasn't been invaded since 1066.

Arguably, therefore, Britain still has a monarchy because we have been lucky enough not to experience the revolution, turmoil, invasion and defeat that has been experienced by most other countries over the last 300 years. The downside of this is that we have not had the opportunity to establish a modern constitution. The British constitution has evolved slowly but we still have some very archaic political systems.

Most people like having something of predictability and familiarity to hold on to.
Oh course there is no need to have a Monarchy, but could you imagine Britain without it?

Tradition... plus, if the system were to be changed, all sorts of stuff would have to be changed... its just easier to keep them there.
Also because we're all waiting for one of them to go insane and turn into an old school monarch... it would be comedy gold, until the revolution.

Simply put... tradition & history...

I kind of am glad they're still is a monarchy... only because of the tradition & glamor that is presented.

Would you rather have drama with no power (Royalty), or drama with someone who had power? (Bush).

I live in the US and I would chose the first one.
