I have a Mazda Capella 2001 and over these past few months this has been happening to my car while I'm driving. I took it to the garage not so long ago for a service and asked my mechanic to check it out, they gave it a full transmission fluid change and said they didn't notice anything wrong with it. The same problem is still happening. Any takers for this question? Please give me several options besides your transmission is stuffed, get a new one. Thanks.

You need to go to a transmission specialist...but it is probably an electrical problem putting it in limp mode. This problem needs to be addressed asap as it is unsafe and it will only get worse!

I do not know if it the same between our Mazda and a PT cruiser, however, mine would suddenly shift into 1st gear while driving with no warning. A couple of times I was on the autobahn doing 85+ mph. The dealer checked the wiring, changed some sensors, changed the transmission, and finally changed the computer before it was finally repaired. The car had less than 1500 miles on it.

Transmissions these days are all computer-shifted. The computer is shutting your transmission down. You'll need more of a specialist to troubleshoot that.
