I've heard that when you hear a tapping noise in your engine it means it is either a rod knocking or valves tapping - which both are bad news for your engine. Is that true or could it be something else (like not serious)?

The good news is that it can be something that is not serious at all. If your car has solid lifters and the noise is coming from the upper part of the motor, you just need your lifters adjusted, but have it done ASAP. The bad news is most of the time it is serious, don't plan any long trips until you can get someone who knows to listen to your motor first hand. Generally speaking, upper engine noises are a little less serious and usually less expensive, and the tapping will be fairly rapid at idle whereas lower engine problems will tap at a slower rate. Its best not to waste any time getting the problem diagnosed, because it could be anything, even as simple as loose flywheel bolts, which are easy to fix, until they come loose enough to cause serious damage.

if its the a million.3 go bypass engine do not difficulty to lots as that's an old technologies engine with adjustable tappets, any physique that tinkers with autos can style this out for you. If its a C.V.H. or zetec engine you have greater suitable issues as they're the two over head camshaft engines and there is not any adjustment which could be made so it means that some element is wiped out and could fee to repair. Why do not you call at a storage and get a mechanics opinion.

A rod will make a cung cung noise, where as rocker arm will tick. Usually it's a weak hydraulic lifter or on an engine where the valves are adjustable, they need to be adjusted. They will last a long time.

Is it knocking or is it tapping? Knocking is bad. Tapping could mean your lifters need work. Have you kept oil in it and changed?

lol, it is bad, your timing could be off, and if your timing is off you could blow a rod through the motor. check the oil.......and give it a good bath
