How can we be sure that the people in the mental institutions are the insane ones and that the rest of us aren't just sharing some massive group-delusion?

And what if we are?!

FYI this question rose to mind while I was thinking about some of the women I live with at the shelter. They are the sort who talk to themselves and unseen others. Totally bonkers.

Myself, I have a new "friend" called borderline personality disorder to go with my other friends Bipolar, PTSD, and Postpartum depression. While I haven't "lost it" entirely, I AM worried that I'm only skirting the edge.

i just posted the same question on Youtube, where are the boundries?

the truth is we are all insane, why? because we don't know where we came from (before birth) we don't know where we are going (after death) and we don't truely know who we are as long as we identify with this body which is a bag of bones and skin, blood and other unsavoury ingredeients,

Most of them aren't insane they just realize the futility of this material world and don't know the answers how to help themselves. Nor do the people in the institutions. In fact they are probably more in illusion than their patients. Everyone within this material world is insane. What do I mean. Insane means they don't know who they really are. Everyone is identifying with this material body as the self when in reality we are not this material body, IE; Race, color, nationality, Religion, mind, intellect, senses, job, etc. We are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We never die, only this mortal body dies.
This material world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here, and the rest are enjoying blissful eternal loving relationships with our Maker named above. Those who are intelligent, take up the process of self realization (Bhakti Yoga) which gives one real peace, happiness and reality. Then at the end of life they can return to the eternal Kingdom where there is no more birth, death, old age, or disease and be eternally happy. If we want to be sane we have to know who we truly are aside from this temporary body and situation.
For info. Go to harekrishnatemple.com Read Bhagavad Gita- As it is by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada asitis.com you can read it on line.

What is the true meaning of insane? Some would say that a police officer risking his life everyday, long hard hours, against criminals, with less pay is insane. Or a high school teacher having to put up with teenagers, who are being teens at school for low pay is insane. I can go on. So, what is insane? It can be defined and put into many different perspectives. Now thats insane.

Those in the hospitals are mentally ill . A few insane folks are in prison , but most have been judged "sane" by the courts . Not sure what institutions house the insane who have not committed horrendous crimes..but rest assured there are more than a few insane sociopaths walking around out there ..myself excluded .

I think we are all kinda born/raised to be insane. The meaning of life is to crawl away from that insanity as far as we can tell. Whats funny is how we are so selective about which delusional people we will tolerate. for example: transexuals are obviously delusional but today they are encouraged in it. The people in insane asylums are either there because they are dangerous or because they don't fit into whats popular at the time.

I think the ones in the mental institutions quit being able to get away with things. The rest of them..it's a matter of time.

Actually, most people in mental hospitals aren't really all that "insane". Maybe just depressed. But as to the few that are truly insane, if you'd ever seen them before, you wouldn't be asking this question. Trust me, you can tell.

There are more than 80% mentally ill people out in the public that hospitals can't help, even if those people asked for help. As told to me by a doctor friend.

That probably is the case. Mentally challenge people are always happy and live in their own little worlds. We are the ones running through life like anys in a rat race, unhappy, comiserating, drunken, high vultars tearing apart a perfect world that was just handed to us. I would love to live in a perfectly happy world for one day like them.

We have what we call social norms. If someone is unable to fit within that box they are labeled "mentally ill". The reason we label people has to do with treatment. If someone is labeled "insane" the treatment is to lock them away, usually sighting that they are a threat to themselves or others.
