How do I respond (in a sensitive way) to someone being untruthful?

The person's intent is not to get out of trouble or avoid conflict. They just talk as though what they wish, was true.

It's hard to describe (as I don't want to violate anyone's privacy) but some generic examples:

1. in "streetcar named desire" where the lead character talks about all the rich men interested in her, when the truth is she is alone and broke.

2. Or the kid whose parent doesn't turn up at Christmas making up a story to his friends about all the expensive presents and all the fun things he and his dad did together in the holidays. That type of thing.

It makes me feel quite sad.

Right now I am just ignoring it but I feel like there must be a better response.

Thank you in advance.

I think life is hard for a lot of people most of the time and all of us at some time. If someone wishes to live in a fantasy world and tell you about it, I say let them. As long as these "tales" do not hurt other people that is. At the same time you can encourage the person to create the reality they obviously want and then they will have true tales to recount.

Just nod and smile. If your intelligence is insulted in the process just click your tongue and shake your head in an exaggerated way like you can't hardly believe that! Even people who make up their lives know when they are lying unless they are mentally disturbed. If that is the case then confronting them about their lies only serves to drive them away or lie even more outrageously. You are a kind soul so it doesn't seem like you'd be able to tell them to take a flying leap....... Good luck.

i'd feel sorry for this person, something must of happened to them in the past to make them lie, maybe they do it to appear more interesting, i'v met people like this in the past and it's annoying when people fill u full of lies, when your trying to have a conversation with them, i'd write them off, unless you really like this person.

the reason people make this up like this is to not make you feel sorry for them and they don't want your pity that is why its very sad but that is what some people do to try and compensate.
