I cant decide to set up a native tank or go with the oscar. I'm leaning towards the bass because they are definetly smarter. I know one drawback is that bass have to eat only live food, which will get pricey over time.

I've had about 4 largemouth (not all at the same time) and they are easily converted to pelleted foods, so don't let that stand in your way. I used primarily cichlid pellets with shrimp pellets, and occasional bloodworms, earthworms, and live feeders only on rare occasions as treats. I liked feeding the last bass pellets, because he would back off to the far end of the tank, and try to catch the pellets mid-air. He also liked keeping an eye on me whenever I was in the room or around the tank, but I've never had a bass as tame as a oscar will get.

I suggest you keep an oscar or maybe a female and male pair.
But if you really want to get the bass you can, but as you said the food will get pricey.
If you're planning on getting an oscar you can feed it live worms, crickets, grasshoppers, brine shrimp, or regular shrimp from the store.
