You may have to do a system recovery. Its like system restore but it will recover your computer completely like as when you first bought it. You may have recover disks. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DOING THIS! HAVE BACK UP DISKS! It helped me when I had your same problem!

Before you do this action go to your start menu and then click on help and support. This will give you more detail or instructions on how to recover your computer.

MAKE SURE YOU SAVE ALL YOUR DATA AND MUSIC, PICTURES, ETC. TO A DISK.

To recover you will have to restart your comp. When it has restarted start clicking the F10 or F12 button. It will prompt you from there!

!!!!Follow the instructions carefully!!!!!! Good luck let me know how it worked!

I had this problem some time ago.
Sorry, I think you´ll have to reinstall your Windows.
I had some kind of a virus that, when healed, changed something inside Windows, and I started t have a 100% usage of PCU everytime I started the PC. Only thing I could do was control+alt+del and stop this program (that was a part of the original system). Out of it, it would work well.
The point was that then I tried to run the System Restore and I received a similar message as yours. So I got to go to task manager EVeRY SINgLE TIME I restarted the machine.
Then it made my wifi connection go mad - no internet.
I phoned my ´puter´s assistance, they told me to do a reformatting and reinstalling the system.
Only way to sort it out, it´s working fine now.

firstly reboot when it start to reboot press F8 several times this will bring up a screen with many options on !
choose to start with Last Known Good Configuration
try this first,
if this does not work try on the same start menu,
Debugging Mode only after the above,
then if either work or not !!!!!
this NEXT, derag your drive ( this can take ages but do it),
then run disk check,
to get to this open my Computer,
Right click on c drive and go to properties at the bottom of the menu,
once this opens click on the tab TOOLS,
then click on error checking, check now,
then tick both boxes , then start,
then a box with an error will come up just click OK then restart your comp....

if you turned off through system restore so your files will be scatter all over the above is to help you try to recover them....
good luck

Win XP has a great utility called system file checker. Click start > run > then sfc - you may need your XP disk for that. Next I would try (and regular readers of my answers will groan at this) a virus scan and spyware scan. If all that fails to cure the problem, then back-up, format and reinstall.

You may have to go to safe mode and do it from there...at start up you press f-8 until the screen changes and select safe mode and restore from there....I had a problem with Java just a couple days ago and went back a few days and it fixed the problem....I too had a proble with restore until I went into safe mode.

sometimes you just have to wipe the slate clean and do a full reinstall of your operating system, other wise you are just trying to patch up problem after problem which can produce even more problems ! I hope you still have the original operating system on a disc. I have had to do this a few times myself.

Get someone to download a couple of browers to CD or USB memory drive for you and install
Opera and FireFox http://www.filehippo.com/software/browsers/

Then a full scan for Viruses and Spyware.
A PC needs 3 types of protection. Anti Virus, Anti Spyware, Firewall. There is a guide on my PC help site on; What you need, Why you need it, Where to get it. (( All are free )).
