The way I remember it is this (don't laugh)...

Starboard is right because there are 2 R's in it

Port is left because it's a 4 letter word that also ends with a T and Port Wine is Red.

Which leaves Green as Starboard - and there are 2 R's in the word Starboard just as there are 2 E's in the word Green.

See? easy.

:-/ :-P ;-)
ps. yes the sky in my world IS pink

The red and green sidelights show from dead-ahead to 112.5 degrees on each side of the bow with the red light on the left (port) and the green light on the right (starboard).

For a memory aid try "Port Red Wine". Port wine is red and the red sidelight is on the port side.

The two shorts and two longs go together. Setting at the helm or wheel, port is on your left and red light is also. Starboard is on your right and so is the green light. You have a white light on the stearn or transom.

We used to say "A little red port left in the bottle". The port side is on the left while onboard and looking forward, and the port light is red. Ships usually pass port-to-port, showing each other the red light as a warning of their presence.

and did you know that this is where the word POSH comes from.
Port Out Starboard Home.
see on a ship when you left England the sun is on the port side LEFT.
Port Out.
on the way home the sun is on the starboard side RIGHT.
Starboard Home.
hence the word posh.
because posh people wanted the cabins with the sun on them.

Easy thumb rules: When comparing the two words remember,

The word "Port" is short and so is "Red" (so is Left)

The word "Starboard" is long and so is "Green" (so is Right)

No, no longer even close. back in Noah's day there have been no such issues as batteries or lights fixtures, yet in his all-understanding techniques, God recommended Noah that sometime, such policies could exist. to conform, Noah asked a chameleon to outlive the two area (port and starboard) and a polar undergo to stay aft.
