I've been asked that twice, like out of the blue. i replied "why not?" the first time, then "because..." the second time around. How about you, how would you reply?

Well, simply because that is my own opinion regarding the issue.

This seems incomplete. When others ask me why it is usually that they dislike something that I have done, disagree with me, and otherwise insist upon some explanation. Such as "why did you do X?" The why comes form the inability to deal with one/s emotional response to an external event.

Why's generally lead to disagreements. The person asking is not asking a clear question that responds to their concern, and the respondant answer with what they believe satsifies the question.

Why were you late? is a question that can have many meanings. Why not, is likely to conflict. Turning a question into a statement can interrupt the process of escalation and conflict.

"Why were you late?" can be responded to as "You're right. I'm sorry, I was late."

I am an educated person, yet I haven't a clue what you're talking about. You clearly have a problem explaining what you mean. I can't reply, I'm afraid, because I have no idea to what I would be replying. Perhaps you'd like to re-submit, but more clearly? I'm sure you have something interesting to say; it's just that what you are trying to say is not coming across to me. Maybe it is to others?

Because, causes have causes, an action far away and long removed resulted in the situation today. To know why we would have to look back and see where the action that started the ball rolling began and trace the path to the present. Then we might have a better idea of why, but I don't think we can ever really know.

Because we are not this material body, IE; Race, color, nationality, Religion, mind, intellect, senses, job, etc. We are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We never die, only this mortal body dies.
This material world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here, and the rest are enjoying blissful eternal loving relationships with our Maker named above. Those who are intelligent, take up the process of self realization (Bhakti Yoga) which gives one real peace, happiness and reality. Then at the end of life they can return to the eternal Kingdom where there is no more birth, death, old age, or disease and be eternally happy.

I would give no reply. I know that seems kind of rude to some people, but if you have done, said, etc. something that you feel needs an explaination, then you are not truly free. After all "A person is truly free when they are able to refuse an invitation to dinner without giving a reason."

Well, if you're a parent, you can always try "Because I said so".
If you believe in a higher power, you can say "Becuase God made it that way".
If you are an atheist, you could say "Because we all voted on it last night while you were sleeping, and that's what we decided".
If you are into scifi, you could say something like "Because the architects of this reality made it that way".
And if all else fails, you could always try "I really don't know. Why don't you ask someone else?"

i would tell them why....i personally ask a lot of questions to get a bunch of different opinions! maybe the person already knows the answer but he wants to know if there is a different answer...just like when you ask the same question on Y!A in two different catergories you will get totally different answers because there are different people in each caterogry!

"Is there a particular reason that you want or need to know?"

Toss it back into their court. Get clarification of the purpose of the question.

On an obscure or ambiguous question like this, that response also opens up dialog.

"Because if it had been any other way... It would be so."

"Why?"

"Because it is as it is."

"Why?"

"Because if it had been any other way, it would be so."

Circular I know... but hey, its nice if you enjoy annoying that annoying person who keeps asking "Why?"

But for the most part it also holds up well. All things being simple of course.... things are as they are.
