Your mechanic is a retard. The only thing it will do is make you fail smog (in California). Keep your stock air box because those cost more than your cold intake kit did.

The carb or throttle body limits the amount of air that goes into the engine.
Many cold air systems do collect more dirt in the air filter. the higher the inlet the better as far as dirt being picked up. that is why the factory cold air is usually on or in the hood or just under it.
The "fix " is to change the filter more often.

Will not damage car, most fuel injection cars will sense the airflow needed and adjust automatically... if it is a carburetor car and it is sucking in loads of air chances are you need it... get it tuned on a dyno and get airflow and fuel mix set properly... too much dust! Where is the filter??? It should not pick up too much as long as it is not low and to the front or in a wheel well or something!

At the end of the day the car will drive like crap if it is running lean. If it drives nice and pulls well don’t worry…but a dyno run is a good option.

as long as the filter is installed correctly and there are no gaps where unfiltered air can get in, your engine can only benefit from more air intake(power, MPG, etc). just make sure you use the filter exactly as the manufacturer says, for instance K&N requires oil on the filter for proper functioning
