The old Route 66 runs from Chicago to L.A. (as the song goes) The most interesting and historically preserved parts of the road are in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona. The Arizona portion is by far the best. They have preserved some of the old Tourist Courts, cafes, filling stations, etc., and you really get a "feel" for traveling on America's Mother Road.

The first time I traveled on Route 66 I was 3, so I don't remember it. I have driven past parts of it more recently, though.

I personally have not. However, I did have a few friends that have travelled along that route. It has long since changed from days gone by. However, a few cities/places/diners/motels that remain unchanged by the progress of growth and modern expansions. There are a few websites devoted to it. There is a Historical Federation trying to restore it's image and place in American culture.

Parts of it in Arizona. Ran across it by accident while taking the long way to Phoenix from Las Vegas (through Flagstaff) by way of Interstate 40. There's also an icon of the highway on top of Cajon Pass on Interstate 15. It's the Summit Cafe. Great breakfasts!

No, I haven't but I sure did like that TV show.
It is very famous, though, I know that. Also, there was a song that went "Get your kicks, on route 66."

Oh, I used to LOVE IT! Travelled it every chance I got.
Going thru New Mexico at
night with the warm air and
stars bright as day. And shooting stars...and staying in
the teepee motel tents for
$8.00 per night. Or those
crummy little motel rooms
with the silverfish and scorpions. The fresh air
blowing your cares away...
and the food WOW. those
mile-high greasy Real beef
burgers and fries to die for.
Man do I miss the fun I used
to have...and gas at 19c/gal.
