There is a little box mounted under the rear passenger fender, gas seamed to be oozing out a little pipe coming out the top. I ask my mechanic he said i could do without use of this part. So i clipped tiny hose going to gas tank and capped it off. Then there is a bigger hose that goes into the engine i thought this went to the fan, thats where its mountedon top the black casing thats the whole back side of engine. I cut the hose under the fender that goes there, gas comes out. Should i let all the gas drain out which is draining from the fan and just let the hose hang freely under the fender? Im a new volks owner and trying to teach my self to take care of her so please excuse my ignorance and thanks very much for any help.

That box is a part of the emission control system. It will run just fine without it , but the fuel tank may not vent properly. The large hose should go to the air filter. 74 should be the large plastic one and not the oil bath style.

We cannot tell you to disconnect the emission control stuff but at least put a fuel filter on the line coming from the tank to keep dirt and stuff from the fuel tank and allow it to vent. if the canister is missing. and plug the air filter line to keep dirt out of the engine.

Probably what has happened was someone overfilled the fuel tank and the access fuel vented into the canister.
