I would not make the mistake of using this opportunity to call the South Korean military "weak." When you consider that South Korea has one of the largest standing armed forces in the world (687,000 active members, 4,500,000 reservists, and 22,000 paramilitary), the term "weak" falls short.

As in the United States, the military has a civilian leader - the President serves as its C-I-C. The South Korean military in Afghanistan, stationed there since 2002, consists of 210 medics and engineers, not combat troops. I think serving out a five-year commitment upon the request of the U.S. showed South Korea's willingness to help quite well, and once again the term "weak" falls short. Have you served 5 years there?

The situation with the Korean Christian group that was taken hostage brings up far more questions than you asked, and we will have to wait to get some solid answers:

How were the Taliban able to take the Koreans hostage?
What security measures did they take, if any?
Were the Taliban paid a ransom to let them go?
Were they doing "volunteer work", or were they missionaries?

Yes. S. Korea seriously erred in complying to their demands. That just sent a message to our enemies that terrorism works. Those S.Koreans should have known the risks of going over there and been ready for them . Now as a result of their stupidity, their country's political clout has been seriously compromised. What the hell were those people thinking when they went over there? Did they really think that noting would happen to them. Idiots!!
And what's irritating is how when they were first kidnapped, the S. Korean government tried to force the US to negotiate! Yeah right! You got your as* in this mess, get yourself out. We have enough global issues to deal with.
