There are commercial products available to keep the water clean. It only takes a few drops per gallon and is inexpensive. Available at stores like Home Depot, OSH, Lowes and other hardware stores. I use it in my backyard fountain.

I have had good luck with just adding baking soda to keep the PH level where it should be. You can get test strips at a pool/hot tub store and I also use bromine tablets, and the water is clean.

good luck.

Get an antimicrobial cleanser and use distilled water so the motor will last longer and it won't get mineral deposits.
