Hiya -anonymous,

I have had to get rid of an embarrassing background or two that somehow got onto my list. To remove it from the list you need to find the background image file on your hard disk and delete it. The next time Windows is started it will not be one of the available choices on the list of backgrounds. The default location for these background images is in the folder C:\WINDOWS, but not always.
Here is how you can remove it:

**For this example we are going to remove a background image file that comes with Windows. It is named "Bubbles" on the list of choices.

1) Click the START button, then SEARCH. From here you can either choose "For Files or Folders" from SEARCH on the Start Menu or "All Files and Folders" from the search window that opens depending on if you use XP or Vista.

2) Once you are in the search window, click on "More Advanced Options" and check the boxes next to "Search System Folders", “Search Hidden Files and Folders" and "Search Subfolders".

3) Choose "Local Hard Drives" from the drop down menu in the "Look In:" box.

4) Type in the name "Bubbles" (Or the name on your list to remove), in the box labeled "All of Part of the File Name".

5) Now click the "Search" button. When a file is found with the same name you should click and open it before deleting. You want to make sure it is the correct one and often more then one matching file will appear in the search results.

6) Once you have made sure this is the file, right click on it and choose DELETE from the drop down menu.

Be careful because the file name may be different from list name. If you practice using Bubbles, the results find the correct file but the name is Soap Bubbles.

Once you delete the file it will disappear from the list of background choices the next time you start Windows.

GOOD LUCK!!

Why would you want to?

Those are just links to picture files somewhere on your computer. They are not the actual files themselves.

Deleting the actual file should break the link.
