My fellow Americans are we really THIS scared?

The Bush supporters say that we have not had another attack on American soil since 9/11. That is a good thing....but WHY are some Americans this afraid of a terror attack? A woman was concerned because of a few Iraqi passengers who were speaking Arabic on board her flight (American Airlines flight 590 from San Fransisco to Chicago). These Iraqis turned out to be Iraq ans U.S. citizens who was hired by the U.S. as part of a training mission at Camp Pendleton. All of the passengers were moved onto other flights because the woman's fear caused a large delay. Is this way over the top or did this woman have a rational fear to delay an entire plane just because she was afraid of some Arabic speaking men? If our president and government are keeping us so safe than why are some people so scared?

This woman has simply fallen prey to the politics of fear. Far to many people nowadays believe what they are told without questioning reasons or motives.

Americans as a whole believe that everyone hates them.

If you look at the foreign media from other countries, you'll get a good, different perspective, but you'll also come away with the notion that we're hated everywhere. Everyone else seems to think, from what you read in the International media, that Americans are the scum of the earth.

This is why many Americans don't travel much. They're afraid that they'll be received poorly in other nations because of their nationality. Most Americans on vacation are just that. On vacation. If I go to another country on vacation, I do so because I want to see how cool their country is, not to have people come up to me and tell me how much my country sucks.

If Americans don't travel, we're criticized for not being cultured. If we do travel, we get to deal with the stereotype that every American who travels doesn't respect other people's culture. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Well, I wasn't on the flight, so I'm very hesitant to pass judgment on the woman - especially since I have claustrophobia badly enough to be a nervous mess on a flight.

But personally, no, I'm not that scared. I think it *could* happen again, and most likely *will* happen again, but I have a far greater chance of getting into a car wreck on my way home from work. I don't worry about that, either.

And I'm a chronic worrier!!

Edit: LMAO I've been sitting here for 10 minutes, thinking about my drive home....

I wouldnt call it scared, but wary. You see, back in September of 2001, some terrorists (Muslim Extremists) flew airliners into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and were trying to do the same to the White House.
So, instead of looking at it like you do, perhaps you could try to understand that these people still want to kill lots of Americans. Even though GWB has done a comendable job of keeping us attack free for the last several years, there should be no reason to let our guard down.

Sorry, but there are a LOT of feeble-minded people in this country. They're content just to watch television during most of their free time, so they've lost the ability to really think.

They therefore are highly susceptible to believe whatever they see on the damned tee-vee. Emperor Bush says, "Be frightened" and they start quaking in their fuzzy slippers. The media says the same thing, and gets the same result. These people just don't catch on when a news report talks about "creditable information" and then doesn't say who the hell it supposedly came from! Utterly asinine.

And then there's the stupid homeland security bozos and their color wheel o' terror. "Gee, what color is it today?" It's just fear-mongering, and some of us just refuse to be manipulated that way.

The really obscene thing is that journalists have completely discarded their responsibility to report the damned TRUTH. Journalists are supposed to be the WATCHDOGS of government, not its LAPDOGS. The press was initially created specifically to keep government accountable; now they're just marketing people. Jesus, look at Fox News -- completely biased. Walter Cronkite should show up on their doorstep and kick their collective @$$E$.

because it is members of a certain culture that are trying to kills us and have killed many. it is a shame that all must suffer but it is not swedes that are blowing themselves up in the name of their God.

it is human nature to fear them when they have themselves vowed to make us afraid. some are more anxious than others and it depends on the personal experience on how they will react in a situation.

we don't know the background of the lady who was so fearful. if she had personal reasons or if she has a phobia that factored into it.

it is a sad time in the world and i wish that they mass of moderates would ban together and be the ones who threw out or stopped the terrorist but they seem to be afraid also so until then, these instances will probably occur frequently.

Because some people have irrational fears. It isn't our goverment that is scaring people they do it to themselves. I know all about this cause my hubby has emotional disorders that include paranoia, anxiety attacks, dillusions, and a whole lot more. This could have been him. It's just to bad the media and you use these sad situations to make a political statement. A little more compassion today would go a long way.

i think we are nervous on flights. I know i'm aware and looking around. i'm not paranoid but i'm definately concerned. i'm looking / observant everywhere i go . i think that other places have risks too besides airplanes. when i grew up i never had to worry too much about personal safety / think security minded thoughts. the world has changed and i don't think that we can ever go back.

Based on what you just said, no I don't think we are that scared. I'm not. But there are people who are scared both on the right and left for various reasons. We should all be getting more informed rather than being so fearful.

Mr Bush can no longer keep us safe. he tried to give our ports away to foreigners, then he continued to leave os open to invasion from the the southern border and do nothing about illegals destroying our country, he is spending us into oblivion, now Mexican trucks will be violating us in many different ways, now the mortgage bailout and Treating our troops and border guards like criminals for doing thier jobs! we are doomed!
