my dad has a gateway computer, and the HD is dead. now, i have an old Hard drive that is originally come with the compaq computer. when i put it in the gateway computer, the pc cant find a HD. so i assume that the HD is for compaq only. i plan to buy a new HD. but i am not sure if gateway computers only work with HD that is designed for gateway pc. any idea?

Hold on did you check your cmos battery ? If it's dead or dying the motherboard will not see the hard drive. Did you try a reverse polairity ? try these first.it could save you money . gl

Any IDE (ATA) HD will work with the computer, but you may need to reformat it for the new computer.
Make SURE the Jumper settings are set to MASTER.
You can find out that info from the manufacturers support site of the HD.

You can use that hard drive, but you must reload Windows because of the HAL Hardware Abstraction Layer ! It will be diffrent !!
