Most people think the duality of man is his/her double nature of good and evil. Some religious people think it means the double nature of man being physical and spiritial. Duality basically means double or two. I'm in the good/evil camp. It's a common theme in movies, books, songs etc. Think Alfred Hitchcock's characters or Shakespeare's plays... Good vs evil makes for fabulous drama.

there are many different meanings to the duality of man. If you take it from Plato where it is between mind and matter. Or from Descartes where it was the difference from your consciousness and your perception. The mind is always a common factor when talking about duality. However duality in literature is different.

The good and evil is not the most basic duality.
Most basic is immortality (our own real life) living in what appears to be a non-immortal existence... but the immortal is the basis of it all. Read a simple explanation in this free on line resource. Later chapters get into it.

Duality refers to the reflexive action of thinking.
When you think, with whom are you speaking? In English, the "I" can speak to the "Me". You may have heard people say "part of me would like to go out and part of me would like to stay home." This is partially due to the impact of language and when the self uses the self as another.
For example, I might think about a conversation with you. I use myself as the object of the discussion whereas I could also speak directly to you.
Or, when a person becomes both the speaker and listener such as in thinking. While I think (subvocal speech) who is listening?

You said it so good 7 years ago Roxie nobody's been able to improve on it. I'm in the same camp as you, Good vs. Evil, I fear the later wins out. One has to hunker down and suffer the fools, in many cases fools with enormous power.
