I am an identical twin. My dad's sister has fraternal twins. Could I possibly get pregnant with twins? I know it is always possible but what is the probability? I have an almost 18 month old & we are trying again. My husband also has twins on his side. I am almost 29, too.

I am the daughter of a twin.
I always thought that with my mother being a twin I would have more of a chance.
When we went to see our genetic counselor they told us that is false. Having twins in your family does not make it any more likely for you to have them.

The vast majority of twinning is chance or follows the maternal line. While there are increased chances of twinning with multiple sets of twins in the paternal line, the fact that you are identical and your cousins are fraternal really just indicate lucky chance happenings.
Twinning, based on age, increases after about 35, so you are still too young for that.
Learned a lot about this stuff as some friends are in an ongoing study. She is an identical twins born to identical twins and her identical twin sister gave birth to identical twins.

I've heard that fraternal twins do tend to run in families but the odds of having identical twins are about the same for everybody.

Sure. If you have a family history or had multiples in the past. Also, the older the mother the higher the chance of twins. In my family, we have so many cases of twins after 35. I would love to have twins...esp identical...

Too funny, I have a friend that is a twin and married and twin. They have 2 children, yet they are not twins, one is 3 one is 8 months. His twin sister, has 2 children, not twins, and her twin sister has 3 children, no twins. But of course, it's still possible.

chances are pretty high you will get twins, especially if it is common on both sides. good luck!
