I try to be humble, but I am not enough humble anyway. The only way to be is getting rid of your ego; ego stops our evolution as human beings.
Good luck ;D

Change your thinking. Change your beliefs.
Think of a few people who would generally be considered to be unpleasant to be around. How do they act? Do the opposite. How do they speak? How do they sound when they talk?
Unpleasantness usually starts with an attitude that be characterized as bad. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Being pleasant isn't a priority in my day. Some people like me. Some people don't. Oh well.

I am in no ways perfect but I never forget my pleasantries.
Here is my grand mother's wisdom*
1. Greetings opens doors.
2 Honesty opens trust.
3. You do not have to be right all the time
4 Be kind.
5 Accept all opinions because they are just opinions.
6.If you want love you have to share your love.
7.If your ideas are important the other persons ideas are important too.
8 This where RESPECT comes.
This sprinkled with your charm and warm smile will make you pleasant to be around.

Talk to uninteresting people and listen without judging.
That exercise, repeated, will make you the center of many people's goodwill.

I suggest that you turn your arrogance into a joke. In that way you can still be arrogant and think arrogantly, but others will see you as humble because you can poke fun at yourself.
For example, I often say things like: "It's not as much fun being the best at everything as you might think. I've always got to deal with people looking up to me and being jealous and whatnot."
Just over-exaggerate your arrogance, and it is a joke.

Well, it's pretty hard for someone who kicks as much *** as I do to be humble. Anyway, I'd say try to keep things balanced; if you feel like you are too hard on your friends, start throwing them some compliments (when you feel they are applicable) and hold your tongue when you want to say something critical. There is praise to be found, but it is harder to find if you don't look for it.

Listen......don't talk too much
Show real interest in what others are saying, they think it is important enough to tell.
Don't try to better other people's stories with your own, even if it is true that yours was bigger, better, more expensive, cooler, etc., It sounds petty.

Sometimes it is better to be alone. We need the space to grow and be our own person... so I wouldn't worry about it, if I was you.
