I put a new thermostat and it was cooling fine for couple of months when the condenser would just stop running even when the furnace fan is still blowing. Is there some switch that can trigger the compressor to stop working? Any ideas would be appreciated.

your thermostat sends low voltage out to a switch called a contactor located near your compressor. when energized the contactor powers up the compressor and outside fan motor.
these contactors can stick and stay on after the thermostat is off. they also can burn out and not make contact at all or it could be intermittent,or my fav..some itty bitty critter crawls in at the wrong time and the contactor smashes its little brains all over the place..

I know with my system there is a thermostat that will keep the fan blowing until the temperature rises in the incoming air. This makes the unit run more efficiently. Since the coil is still cold, the fan makes use of this and blows more air until the coil warms up.

If you have a multimeter, you can check the input voltage to the coil on your contactor for the compressor. Sometimes, the contacts can weld themselves shut and will not allow the compressor to shut off. If you have no voltage on the coil of the contactor and the compressor is still running then kill the voltage to the compressor at the main panel and then replace the contactor.

good luck.

If this is a round T-Stat with Mercury in it it must be level.

If not then take the T-Stat off the wall and disconnect the G wire, If the fan goes off I would say bad T-Stat
