That word in relating to online activities, began on AOL back in the 90's. Means a jerk. Like a troll in mythology. Disgusting evil person. In the case of online, someone who just likes to stir people up, begin flame wars, etc.

hunny there were trolls on here long before the c family. a year ago there was one called edna running wild on all the boards. trolls are people who go in to chat room message boards and sites like this for the sole purpose of making people mad

It comes from fishing terminology. It is like "trolling" for fish, in which you cast a juicy piece of bait and make it dance as you slowly reel it in and wait for a bite. It is used in many forums.
"Trolls" attempt to provoke angry answers by "baiting" people with controversial questions.
