Well, I was going to say, just the terminology.
They are both webs made by spiders, but it looks like I got here too late.

Anyway, that's the truth and I am with Gracie, I hate spiders and their nasty old webs.

Well my Friend, according to Wikipedia there are several differences!

Cobweb can refer to:

The Middle English name for a spider web. Origin of the word is coppeweb, coppe pronounced 'cobbie' being the Middle English word for spider, which was introduced to England by Dutch invaders and originally pronounced 'kab' in the Netherlands. Contrary to popular belief, cobwebs only form when dust collects on wayward pieces of silk produced by spiders or other insects. Popular myth indicates that dust alone is capable of forming a chain, with each piece connecting to the next piece, finally forming intricate lines in corners and across furniture. This belief is erroneous.
Cobweb Spider, a group of spiders, also known as Tangle web spiders.

hierarchical conceptual clustering.
In mathematics, a web diagram, also called a cobweb plot, is a graph that can be used to visualize successive iterations of a function y==f(x).[1]

Cobwebs appear when something is dusty and dirty. Spider webs can appear anywhere like outside on a tree. Yes the spider makes the cobweb, but it's only called cobweb if it's in a dirty dusty area.

They are probably the same thing. However, I tend to call a spider web that looks like a web, a spider web and when it is a collapsed web, a cobweb.

I think the cobweb is related to The Dust Bunny, and a spider web actually comes from the spider.

Cobwebs are made by a species of spider that makes a short and irregular shaped web instead of the big elaborate ones like others make. Because they are sticky, they do collect dust.

According to my dictionary, a cobweb is an indoor spider web that has collected dust.

FYI, most spiders spin symmetrical webs, but the shiny black spider that spins a really sloppy web is one to avoid. You're dealing with a black widow.
