Please don't support PETA (vegetarian or not), support the rights of animals to be treated ethically, but don't support PETA. They're nothing but a bunch of hypocrits - from July 1998 through the end of 2005, PETA killed over 14,400 dogs, cats, and other companion animals. PETA is not an animal welfare organization, they spend less than one percent of their multi-million dollar budget actually helping animals.

*EDIT: And to answer your question, in my opinion, yes, you can be a meat eater but still support the ethical treatment of animals. However -

"PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk has described her group’s overall goal as 'total animal liberation.' This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). PETA is also against all medical research that requires the use of animals." - http://www.petakillsanimals.com/article_detail.cfm?article=134

So I guess the real answer would be, no, you can't eat meat and still support PETA. You can't have dairy or own any pets either.

Why would you support an organization that is so incapable of saving animals lives?

Do you realize they are responsible for releasing show dogs at shows and allowing them to escape into cities, hence at the mercy of passing vehicles?

There are many more atrocities they people do that do more harm that good to animals.

Before you start spouting that you want to help PETA, become informed and see how damaging they really are for animals.

You can support who ever you want. But, for me the answer is no, I hate PETA. What they do to grab the attention of the media is disturbing.

I do...and while they promote vegetarianism on their website, they never try to talk you into or force you to do anything.
