That is definitely, without a doubt, a northern water snake, Nerodia sipedon. I have one that someone gave me, and it is 100% identical. And water snakes were some of the first snakes I ever owned. This also tells me you live in the eastern half of the U.S.

In the wild, water snakes eat primarily fish and frogs. Avoid goldfish, since they're pretty unhealthy. Bait shop minnows are a much better choice. Although they do spend alot of time in the water, they are also on land quite a bit, basking, hiding, or hunting frogs. If they are not allowed a dry place in their enclosure, they can develop a skin infection, which causes large bumps and scarring. They also usually have a very nasty attitude!

Definitely not a python. You really should get it out of that jar. Even if it is a water snake it still needs to get out of the water and dry out. It's really impossible to identify from the pics you have posted. The best thing to do would be to let it go where you found it.

What you have is a chess board. It cannot be a checker board for the fact that it is smart, and being that it feels weird means you probably have an older fashion made out of wood. Trees look creek water. Plus, it's very uncommon to find checker boards that are black and white.

The fact that it eats small things right now means that you've encountered a cursed chess board that has taken life as a carnivore. I suggest you find a gypsy to undo that curse. Good day.

Two things: GET THAT SNAKE OUT OF THAT JAR, you're going to drown it, if it hasn't drown already.
2, that's a baby black rat snake & you're going to kill it feeding it bugs & fish. They eat rodents even as a baby. These are land dwelling snakes even though they swim well, no snake can survive swimming constantly, except sea snakes.
This is not a baby water snake as was suggested.

That is not a python, as pythons are not native to America and very seldom swim. What you have seems to be a banded water snake. Check out these websites for more info and pics:

I doubt it's a python. Where do you live? It's probably a water snake.

*note that diamonds on a snake do NOT mean that it's venomous as someone previously stated.

Edit: saw the pictures- absolutely not a python. It's time you release him- you'll kill him in that jar of water. :( Poor little guy.

That poor guy is not a python and needs to be released back into the wild ASAP. All snakes can swim, but snakes can drown too. It doesn't look like a water snake though I can't give a positive ID. Please just get it out of that jar and back to where it lives.

Oh and diamonds do not indicate venom. I bet you'd have found out by now if it was venomous.

It looks like an Eastern milksnake and it will soon become exhausted and drown in that jar of water. You need to give him a dry area to live on with just a bowl of water.
Perhaps after you have finished observing him you could just release him back where you found him.

just let it go back into the wild. it's gonna die if you keep it in that jar of water, i dont know why you put it in there in the first place.
