Is it only based on stats alone or are there other determining factors?

It is not based on stats alone or the contribution made to the team, it is all about what your agent was able to do for you when a player signs with the team. Wright was highly touted when he signed and commanded more money to sign than Reyes.

Position value...third basemen with power and speed who hit for a high average are very hard to come by. Then you have to factor in his gold glove defensive ability. On the other hand shortstops are usually depended upon to bring speed and hit for a high average already. I think if you look at it as a whole while reyes may be the "most exciting" player in baseball, Jimmy Rollins and Hanley Ramirez are right now more valuable b/c they have speed, and the thing they have that reyes doesn't have is power. Other than stolen bases, Ramirez has a high average, more homers, more RBI, better slugging, and is younger than reyes...rollins, more homers and RBI...So while people like to put reyes on a pedestal as the best offensive SS in the game, the fact of the matter is he may not be the best SS in the game, just the best at his style of play..David Wright on the other hand is up there with A-Rod in their own category...ryan braun looks to join that group of elite hitters with great power, but right now it is A-Rod and David Wright, and then everybody else....on the next level you have chipper, aramis, etc...so this is what i mean by position value...Plus when Wright signed his contract his future was none the less pormising, and he had proved the two years previous he would be an everyday player, Reyes on the other hand made a miraculous comeback last year after a history of trips to the DL, most notably an injury that sat him out the entire season prior to last season....so last year he still had something to prove, b/c he hadn't proven how great he can be....when it comes time to renegotiate though, i guarentee his status as far as money goes will be right up there with Wright and may exceed that until it comes time for david to renegotiate as well.

Wright's contract covers 3 years of free agency (he'll have 3 years in the majors as of the end of this season), while Reyes's only covers two years (he'll have 4 years). That, combined with the longer length of the contract, accounts for a big chunk of the difference. The rest is because Wright is a bit better at the plate (.915 lifetime OPS vs. .762), and that adds to his value more than Reyes's speed and defense add to his.

Good question. I am a huge NY Mets fan and my favorite player is David Wright. I think Jose is an excellent ball player, hands down best lead off hitter but I believe it has to do with the power numbers. For some reason they seem to give more money to the guys driving in the runs then the guys scoring them. Go Mets, beat them Braves this weekend!!!

who knows? also, these contracts were signed a over a year ago. David Wright was hitting A LOT of homeruns in the 2006 season, so maybe the Mets thought he was worth more. Also, maybe he asked for more and Reyes was more content with less. but really who knows?

Homeruns and power. Wright has better power numbers than Reyes. All baseball executives care about is power, but mostly the homerun. When Wright hits the free-agent market, he could easily be going to a team that could pay him lots and lots of money, just because he has a little pop in his bat. Which is why the Mets gave him so much.
