I bought a new plant yesterday, a small Bird of Paradise. It's my first time to ever work with one and honestly, I couldn't find anything special about it online. I just wanted to see if anyone else has ever grown one and if so, if there's anything I need to know about this plant that makes it's growing different from common house plants.

I live in San Diego, and Birds are all over the place. They actually don't take much upkeep here at all. If you plant them, give them plenty of space because they bunch up like a bush.

I think they are pretty sensitive to more extreme variations in weather than we have here though. Other than that, they are pretty easy.

Good luck!

Edit: If they are just growing leaves and no flowers, try trimming them back. The older leaves will be on the outside. I remove the old leaves, with 1 or 2 newer leaves remaining. Shortly after I trim them back and water them, they bloom like crazy.

I put in the term "Bird of Paradise Plants" into "Search the Web" and here is a sample of what I got. I think if you just put in the term "Bird of Paradise" then people start worrying about them flying up their nose! I think you'll have better luck if you include the word plant. Hope this helps.

I'm in the Central Valley in California near Fresno and mine just keeps growing leaves, but no flowers. I've had it for 4 years. I know it likes full sun. It grew more the year I didn't have a cover on my gazebo since it is right at the edge of it.
