The moon is seen in dull red colour during lunar eclipse. At this time earth's shadow fall on the moon. The sunlight passes through the earth's atmosphere and gets refracted as well as scattered.During the scattering process, the blue colur is scattered most and is filtered by the atmosphere with the result only red light reaches the moon and due to refraction the shaded area is also covered to some extent.Hence the moon looks red at that time.

When the moon is in the Earth's shadow, the moon turns red and orange. This is caused by sunlight that is scattered by the atmosphere, into the Earth's central shadow region. This can happen twice a year, each time during the lunar eclipse.

During a lunar eclipse, the moon passes into the Earth's shadow, and the suns light is filtered through the Earth's atmosphere; it makes the moon appear dull red.

The Names of the Moons
The list below shows names for 3 moons in each season. The most common names are shown, along with a number of alternate names. Many of the names are translations American indian names. Others are of European origin. They are all names for full moons occuring in a given time period.

Some names appear more than once because they may be used in a different place in the sequence depending upon whether moons are "early" or "late". The third moon in a season with four moons is called a "Blue Moon".

Our list begins with spring because spring is traditionally and historically the beginning of the year and because the first moon of spring, the Easter Moon, has a precise definition.
