Here's what people don't understand, and this is why you're right. The ideas behind communism are not bad at all, and if communism functioned the way it was laid out, it would be a good and possibly workable government. It hasn't worked in the past, though. That's the reason that people can go against it, is because of what it turns into.
However, anyone who says that the USSR, especially under Stalin, was communist, is kidding themselves. That was an extremely despotic dictatorship that stemmed out from a society that tried to be communist. The only arguments people can make against communism that make sense in the world as it is today are about how it's resulted in bad leadership, though the same can be said of any society. Really, while people can agree or disagree with the various ideals of communism, it's a decent form of government and one that shouldn't be automatically chastised.
Oh, and m_c_m_a_n, that was not even socialist. If you want a good example of socialism, take a look at the Kibbutzim in Israel, not the Russian example of despotism.

Correction:
1) All education even colleges are paid for by the government
2) The city of NY made a treaty with the school unions. Now the city cannot fire them. All of the child molesting and drug selling teachers now sit in an empty room and get paid huge salaries out of taxpayers' pockets just for sitting for 7 hours.
3) What's to stop people from pretending to be sick
4) Would you like it if you were the doctor who was FORCED to come to people's house for low wages
5)Why should the drug-addicted, stupid bum who does a terrible job at work get the same house as a smart, healthy, productive citizen.
The problem with communism is that there is no choice. With capitalism, you can choose between different companies. For example, if you need to ship a package somewhere you could use UPS or FedEx. Both want your business. UPS might charge $25 while FedEx would charge $19. No one would go with UPS because it is too expensive. UPS would have to lower their price or go out of business. So they lower their price to $15. And so on. They want your money, so they will give you more bang for your buck than the other guys.
With communism, you have to pay a set price and the service is terrible because you have no choice.
Same is true with education, healthcare, food, electronics, or any other thing.
Communism provides shitty service for more money.

1. Education was not "free", the state paid for it and you paid for the state. Thus, you were forced to pay for education whether you had one or not.
2. People had thankless jobs that all paid the same. Doctors were treated the same as a person shining shoes. One takes more effort, time, and skills than the other. Thus medicine was awful under communism.
3. Your salary was atrocious and you had to wait in long lines for bread.
4. If you were sick, you were cared for by an overworked, underpaid, under-educated doctor who could not give you proper treatment.
5. If you were in disagreement with the government, the government would imprison or kill you.
All in all it was a jolly good time. No wonder the Soviet Union collapsed. Stop trying to rewrite history. Communism doesn't WORK.

The underlying basis of Communism is bad. The idea behind Communism is that no matter what you do, no matter your abilities, no matter what you can do, you will never get anywhere in life because not everybody can. While yes you can say that everyone has certain things like a place to live, and health care, no one has the opportunity to do better for themselves.
Also, I believe Capitalism4Ever was saying he himself was 13, not you.

The social benefits, yes, may have been good. But at what cost to the citizens? Almost complete loss of freedoms. A median was never established between government and people, so the State had total control.

The only problem is that you were not real communists, you were Socialists. You tell me that college is free but why go if your education is not rewarded? People are conditioned to want reward.
Communism would be the ultimate if people weren't so greedy and self serving.
Here's one thing you were not and that is free. Why do you think your alcoholism rate was so high and that still lingers on.
There are drawbacks to every form of government.

I agree that there were some good aspects to communism, however, I would rather be free than have big brother looking over my shoulder all the time. Communism is just plain inferior to capitalism; that has been proven many times. I agree that it is a national shame that the US does not provide health insurance or health care for all of our people!

Of course the USSR was never anyway communist. True communism is an ideology where everyone is equal and in that surely true freedom is obtained.

It was fine until you found you couldn't pay for it. People don't put out the same kind of effort to enrich other people or the state. In theory it is great but unfortunately it doesn't account for the reality of human nature.
