After you get the smell out, be sure to let them dry thoroughly before wearing again. Stuff each one with a fabric softener dryer sheet immediately after you take them off to keep them smelling nice. Then put the dryer sheet back in every time you take them off.

If the smell is coming from the outside of the shoe, use baking soda and a touch of Pine-sol and a scrub brush. If it is from the inside of the shoe use Pine-sol direct, let it sit after lite scrubbing then baking soda. Let sit a couple of hours the with a small vacuum attachment vacuum it all up. Or you can do both inside and out and see how that works. Should do the job though. Good luck.

Use a soft towel like cloth, wet with white vinegar, clean and scrub extensively. Let it dry (in the Sun) very well, then sprinkle baking soda inside and rub around well. This usually takes the sting out of most of the smell for awhile, but has to be repeated of course, with the more they're used.

I read an article that said to wash the shoes in hot water. After they are dry, sprinkle them with baking soda, place in a large plastic bag and then stick in the freezer overnight. The article said that it works. It is worth a try.

I saw on Rachael Ray yesterday, this same thing came up. This woman said that if you put them in a ziploc bag then place them in your freezer, overnight, it will take away the stink.

Wash them first. And them febreeze them. Oh yeah, to keep them smelling nice, after washing them, put them out in the sun. But remember to wash them regularly so the odor doesn't build up.
