If I was going to homecoming with my date who is the exact same height as me-5'8-would it look unusual if I wore heels? Also, would it be appropriate to wear flats with a pretty dress?

If your dates about the same height then yes heels might look a bit awkward but your choice really =]
And no flats/pumps go with pretty much anything so they would be appropriate for your pretty dress =] x

To (kind of) answer both your questions it all depends on the kind of dress. Like with maybe a more subdued, old-fashioned dress flats would look perfect with, but if your dress is fancy/shiny you'd best choose heels, just not that high.

Wear kitten heels. The heel is only about an inch, so you won't be towering over your date, but they're still dressier than flats.

Ask your date! My son has dated several girls taller than him, and he doesn't mind at all.
TIP: you should have a pair of 'go with everything' dress flats and heels anyway - invest in both eventually, with matching clutches.
Suggest shoes in gold, silver, or nude strappy sandals - they go with everything.

wear flats. I've been in this situation and it does get akward when you have heels on.
flats are cute anyways!!!!
