I want to buy a baseball cap for someone, but I don't know who thier favorite team is. Are there some teams that are a safe choice?

If there is a minor league team in the area they live it, you could get one of them. Other than that, if the person is a big baseball fan, there's a good chance they won't like the team you pick.

First choice would be to buy the cap of the team closest to you.
Cities with 2 teams:
New York probably a Yankees cap unless they live in Queens, Brooklyn or Long Island.
Chicago probably a Cubs cap unless they live on the SouthSide
San Fran/Oakland probably a Giants cap unless they live in Oakland
Los Angeles, probably a Dodgers cap unless they live closer to Anahiem
DC/Baltimore, I'd go with the Nationals cap with the interlocked DC unless they live closer to Baltimore.

There's no safe choice when it comes to real baseball fans.
You really need to find out who their favorite teams is by asking a relative or friend of that person.

even though im from boston, it seems like everybody wears yankees hats, so id go with yankees.
