Mo,
I would suggest using a tampon. It might be a scary thought at first (it sure was for me) but once you get the hang of it, everything will be fine. I use Tampax Pearl, it is much easier to insert than a cardboard tampon, and it sure worked!!
For your first time, you should use a slender or regular size tampon. But if you will be swimming for quite a while, i would suggest using a super absorbancy.
For help inserting tampons, read the directions inside the box, or you could go to the bookstore and find a book called "the keeping and caring of you" written by american girl.
good luck and have fun swimming!

Tampons. But I believe it's tampax who has a new tampon for women who do sports. I assume it's more flexible so when you're running or swimming it moves better with you. You can try that or just get a tampon to match your flow.

Use a Tampon ... and if it hurts after you have inserted it then you haven't put it in properly. Never be afraid to ask someone for help that you trust if you have never used a tampon before.

You wear a tampon. Just put a new one in before you get in the water, and change it as soon as you get out.

use a tampon.
Water does NOT stop a period, and you can't use a pad because it will blow up like a diaper.
