The Sumerians of Mesopotamia impress me the most. A majority of historians consider them to be the first civilization because they developed the first know written language (cuneiform), they had a collection of cities that were considered large at the time (10,000+ people each), they had many examples of complex institutions (based around religion, military, agriculture, and government), they engaged in extensive trade with one another, as well as with other regions, and were scientifically advanced for their time (credited with inventing the wheel, irrigation [though some believe that began in Egypt], and bronze for weapons and tools). They were both innovators, developing many firsts, but also great adapters as they were at a great cross roads of many travelers of their time.

The Romans.
-Because the idea that a law is something that applies equally to all citizens originated with the Romans.
-Because the idea that you could rise to become an aristocrat if you worked hard enough and made enough money originated with the Romans.
-Because the idea that foreigners could become citizens originated with the Romans
-Because the concept of separation of powers originated with the Romans
-Because the only ancient society that made a habit of freeing slaves were the Romans
-Because the idea that the state treasury could be used in service to the people originated with the Romans.
There are a lot of misconceptions about Rome, perhaps due to the prevalence of intriuging fiction, which plays up the corruption element and downplays the fact that Rome was the first virtuous society in history.

the ancient hebrews during the period of the warrior kings, I love how they were able to kick every body's butt being outnumbered and with no support from anyone.
the ancient polyenisans for having the guts to cross an ocean they knew next to zip about and still be able to haul those monoliths across WATER in those little rafts on the easter islands.
the inuit, naturally adapaters and compassionate, willing to help the vikings and were rejected out of viking pride and racism, these people haven't changed much.
the aztecs, natural butt whuppers and also able to successfully adapt to that jungle better than other tribes.
the anasazi. ya gotta love those people for their building skills! those cliff dwellings were able to help them survive until for whatever reason the vanished.
the huns, you gotta love anyone who can whup Rome's butt!
I love the mythology of the ancient egyptians and greeks, along with the ancient greeks

The Egyptians. How they had all this mythology and were concerned for the dead, and how cats were gods and especially on how they build the pyramids. Totally amazing!
