I live in Maryland, which was just named as the richest state out of all 50. THAT can be attributed to wealthy politicians living here and spending their money here while they commute to DC to work. Its cheaper to live here...If you actually lived here you'd know that the majority of people who live here aren't rich at all...we're mostly mid to low income households. The only reason our median household income average is so high is because of the ridiculously wealthy people who live here bringing the average up.

Back in the day when this great country came about and technology was limited.. this trend started

First, there were more ports (and better places for them) in the north which allowed an entirely different mode of income. With this, importers and exporters, business like jobs, an idustrial type setting, were able to flourish. Also, this is where immigrants were more likely to arrive, providing cheap labor and enabling northern businesses to rake in the profits.

In the south however, there were many problems. the southern areas were focused on planting cash crops.. mainly corn and tobacco.. well actually MAINLY tobacco. They would grow and grow and grow as much as they could thinkingit would get them more money...
unfortunately.. it would just create inflation and put a damper in the market.. then, these farmers were unable to recover because they had taken all of the beautiful soil in their land and overplowed it (the dustbowl is a longterm effect of this)

Additionally, there was an extremely long amount of time in this country without cars steamboats and railroads. Before the steamboat, northern business men could float their products to the south and make profit but it was a much more difficult haul for southern farmers. It wasn't until the steam boat that the Mississippi worked both ways. Then of course the railroad helped in this too.

Next, there was this beautiful thing called the civil war and the emancipation proclomation.. This war, just as most wars in america, helped the economy. Only as the country was split.. it helped the north a LOT more than the south. After the war was over, the sudden freeing of slaves in the south prosed an even bigger problem... Now southerners had to pay money to hire the work that wasnt even helping them make all that much money in the first place.

While you may believe that since then the south should have had enough time and technology to pull itself together, it is a more laid back area and it geographically isnt placed to become a money saturated market like the north. Those who live there live there because they love it. It is actually one of the most beautiful areas of this country.. well there are so many but you know :-]

Because the jews own and run all the industries down there, and they take a hefty slice of the profits for themselves although they never do anything to earn any of it! To: thegubmit Then why did the North have to have the congress enact the first minimum wage law, since the South had all the cheap labor that the North was lacking. Because it made things equal on one level. Then the South would have to pay their people the same rate as the Northern plants had to pay their people! And you thought minimum wage was created out of the goodness of the government hearts!

In the most part, it has to do with the industrialization of the country. As work came to certain areas, the north, people were able to find jobs which provided them with money. This allowed for peopel to live in close knit areas which allowed for taxes and schools.
More schools allowed for a better education...it was more readily available. Better educations lead to better jobs.
In the south however, farmers mostly relied on how much the could produce, which meant children had to help out, which often led to missing school or only going for a few years. Therefore, education became lower and the job market stayed lax
As of date, this can still apply. There are still many farms and rural areas in the south. However, as the industries continue to move south, this shift in education and therefore income should change.

They've always been wealthier. That was one of the main reasons behind the Civil War in the first place, that the North, with its higher population and more power in Congress was stacking the deck as far as tariffs and regulations against the Southern states.

Most -industrial kinds of work to be found in the North? Southern states were mostly agricultural for long time... many left and headed North after Civil War. Cycles of poverty continue in the South to this day.

This is something that hasn't really changed in all the years of this country.

By the large, the northern portion of our country is more heavily industrialized; while the southern portion is more heavily farmed. As such, the industrialized areas make more money and generally have better economies than the areas that rely mostly on crops for income.

The Northern States have to live so close and their all kind huffy , they don't eat cornbread, sweet potato pie, peas , fried okra, sweetened Ice Tea , Greens just the good old southern cooking. They eat kidney stew and just some old funky food so they save money with their food bill. The Northern people aren't friendly and they don't have company running in to eat, so they save money. The Northern people eat Turkey and Stuffing , we southern people eat Turkey and Dressing, just two different cultures. The souther people are friendly , the northern people we can't understand what their saying so we just live better. Two complete different worlds.

Most would probably jump to conclusion here but I think its because most business venues are in the north and also things like capital coming in from outside the country flows mostly into the north(north east esp.) to cities like New york, Chicago, Boston etc to name a few...

I dont know. I could be wrong but that's my little theory. :)

They aren't really wealthier, if you consider GDP and cost of living it breaks even. It doesn't seem that they're wealthier when you start looking at the prices they pay for services and goods.
