Men generally have more mass and muscle in them. think of testosterone, man things vs. women things. Womenpower doesn't really have the same power, honestly. I'm not saying women are frail, just that as a whole men have more muscle and mass.

There is a temp agency named Manpower. That is just the name of the company. No bias, just business. I prefer to use the terms People Power myself.:)

The word Man in manpower should not be treated as masculine. It has no gender. One should understand the meaning as human power. It can be a lady or a gent.

Similarly Chairman has no gender. It can be used for both. Of late we observe people are using Chairperson when a lady holds such post.

Fortunately in the words of Prime Minister or President there is now word of man. If it is there I do not know what they would have done.

Because the English language was developed several centuries before women's rights.

Additionally "man" can also be used as an all-purpose expression for a human being of either sex.

From the Oxford English Dictionary:

• noun (pl. men) 1 an adult human male. 2 a male member of a workforce, team, etc. 3 a husband or lover. 4 a person. 5 human beings in general.

The 4th and 5th definition make the word unspecified in gender.

While slang is a matter of personal preference I sometimes refer to my female friends as "man" such as "Damn man, why'd you eat all the nachos?"

So women are part of mankind, can contribute manpower, put in man-hours of labor, use a manhole and man all battle stations if necessary.

I have no idea!!! I wonder about things like this. I hate it when people are so sexist to say MANPOWER. I mean, I disagree with the other people. Just because it says in the Bible that woman came out of man, isn't the word itself a promising factor? Man comes OUT of woman!!! I mean seriously! Also, women also have more power. We have to worry about getting pregnant, having kids, taking care of them, making sure we pick the right husband, having fights with our mothers, fighting over possessions with our sisters, and also having to be "ladylike" all at the same time! I mean seriously... We're the ones who get AIDS from men too... It's not completely their fault, but hey they freakin' had them and they didn't tell us! I don't personally have AIDS, but f*** those guys to h*** who gave those poor women AIDS. And not only if you're some rich sorry white woman!!! I mean, for all of those women being pushed around by men, I salute them. For all those women who kicked the s*** out of their husbands for beating them once, I'm in your rally, in you're protest, and in your strike. WOMEN TO THE POWER!!!!!

It should be manpower. Females are unpredictable. Some may work. Most of them are delicate darlings. You cannot generalise some exceptional women as a rule. On the other hand you can standardise the work output of men.

Because "man" when used in MANpower, does NOT refer tot he male of the species. "man" in that case refers to the whole species collectively.

P.S. Why not complain about female words like woMAN ?

Oh gosh not another political correctness thing. There is no need for us to replace these terms because they do not have any intent hidden behind them. However if you are the sort that needs to convert everything they deem is sexist to non sexist then I would suggest that you start a campaign to stop the usage of man and woman itself. We should all be referred to as humans only.

People must have awful good lives, if this is the only thing they have to complain about.

I'm sure the bias of this term will irreparably damage millions upon millions of women.
