I have a whirlpool natural gas cooktop. When I turn the the knob to ignite one of the burners, the ignitor keeps clicking for about 20-30 seconds. Then I hear the gas start to flow and the burner lights.

To make sure the delay was caused by the gas not flowing (opposed to the ignitor not working) I held a match to the burner. The same result... 20-30 seconds before the gas starts to flow.

What could cause this delay in the gas flowing? What can I do to fix it?

have you considered your pilot light? this control whether or not you get gas; it might be low or running out.

The length of time in between uses is what causes a longer delay. If you use it daily it will not take as long. If you use it only occasionally it will take longer. I have noticed that on mine. Since I live alone and use the microwave a lot and don't use the stove as much it takes it longer to ignite. I assume it just takes longer for the gas to fill the line in between uses.

If your stove has an igniter, it doesn't have a pilot light.

Safety valve/regulator is faulty. Should only take 2-3 seconds to light. If you feel confident in disconnecting and you have some basic tools, you can replace this part yourself.
