What's the stigma about not wearing white after Labor Day? Why shouldn't we do it?

According to Stacy London and Clinton Kelly (the style gurus from TLC's "What Not to Wear"), the no white after Labor Day rule is no longer applicable.

I did find this information, however:

"Image consultant Nancy Penn suggests that because white reflects light and heat, wearing white would make you cooler in winter, and thus should be avoided. But others suggest . . .that in the late 19th century and the 1950s, more people were entering the middle classes. These nouveau-riche folks were often unaware of the standards of high society, so they were given specific codified rules to follow in order to fit in."

Well, whether it's temperature or class, the rule has gone the way of the dodo bird--extinct.

:-)

The season change right after labor day and white below the waist should not be worn in winter months. Basically white pants/shoes don't look good in the snow.

Some people will tell you this is no longer the rule - these people follow fads and not style and true fashion.

The only ignorant question is one that is unasked.

It is an old stigma based on the fashion "rules" of the mid twentieth century.

Not many people follow this any longer and many designers are actually producing various shades of winter white to meet the demand.

There was a time when people went "overboard" with manners. Several books were written detailing every little aspect of them, the most notable author was Emily Post.

The no white after labor day is one of those Etiquette rules - it doesn't really have any rhyme or reason, it's just a made up rule.

I think because Labor Day is the traditional end to summer and things like White and straw bags or hats weren't "done" except in summer. It doesn't hold up anymore since fashion rules are more relaxed.

Basically because of tradition the Natives set up for us in America. For example, women wear skirts because of tradition and men wear pants because of tradition. After all these years of tradition people are starting to break tradition. Like, most women wear pants more than they wear skirts and some brave people who don't care what people think of them wear White after labor day.

its something the fashion industry started so you would have to wear new clothes starting in the fall. its why they come out with new color every season. and things have changes so now you can wear white all year round.

it has to do with fashion, (from what i know). Apparently wearing white and light colored- clothing during the fall and winter is not fashionable, because during these times, dark clothing is more suitable and "looks better".

It's just a fashion rule. It's slightly more flexible these days, but still a general guideline
