The price of gasoline has really risen in the U.S. in the past couple of years. 19% of our family's pay goes just for gasoline. That does not count the price of an auto or repairs. We are paying twice as much for gasoline as we are for food. Is it that high for other people too?

We don't have a PC or internet. I go to the library to use the computer. We don't drive a hummer either. My husband has to drive 45 miles each way to work.

I do not have a cell phone, cable, internet, go out to eat, or go to movies. We do not drink or smoke either. We shop at Goodwill for our clothes.

I can really relate. My wife and I share one vehicle..a van..I'm just a regular working guy..My wife and I both work but we don't have high paying jobs..As far as me being on line I'm on my comp at work....We have had to cut corners else where so the money can go in the gas tank. I'm at about 15% to 20% of my pay going towards gas.

HA ha ha...thats as bad as someone telling me, "Boy that must suck driving the car I drive with gas being expensive and it being a V8". I simply state, no it doesnt suck cause I dont care.

Lets face it, gas is a constant factor as well as Automobile repairs, getting a new roof for your house in a couple decades, new water heater. washer and dryer or...you get the point.

Now here is the reality. Do you need a cell phone, cable, internet, fashionable clothing, do you go to the movies, have a drinking problem, have a smoking problem, have pets, have children, go out to eat? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then these are the items with in your control.

On average I spend $50 in lunches for the week while I am at work. If I didnt eat out, I could save $25. Do I? No, for the most part I work hard for my dollar and there for dont gripe about things I have control over nor things I do not its called life.

We spend about 2 to 3% of our income on gasoline. We traded in our suv about 2 years ago for a compact sedan. We now get 30+ MPG instead of the 12 MPG with the SUV. And we pocketed cash because the SUV was worth more. I have also taken up biking to work twice a week. It's about 15 miles round trip. My wife also wrote a proposal to her boss in which she convinced him to let her telecommute twice a week.

Why does your husband commute 90 miles rountrip to work? That alone will cost you $5,000 per year in gas alone! This doesn't even factor in his wasted time on the road. 520 hours per year! That's a part time job! Value his time at $20 per hour.... It would be more beneficial to you guys if he took a job down the street for $15,000 less.

Heck no. I pay around that % for my house. You need to pack up and move closer to work, get a job closer to home, or stop driving around so much, I think. I might spend 1% of my income on gasoline.
