Largest but I've seen is the hercules beetle. That thing is huge!
Horror story - down south, one of those palmetto bugs, or flying cockroaches flew into my friends mouth. Another one crawled on my friend's leg at night. ew!

I've lived in the "south" most of my life. By that I mean about 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The biggest bug I've ever seen was in KY. It was a huge, very hard shelled beetle of some sort, that cracked the windshield on a car when the person hit it.

And it was still alive afterwards. About the size of a tennis ball kind of beetle.

We tried to kill it, and ended up having to run the thing over.

I have seen some monstrous roaches in the south. When I was doing a project near Shaw AFB our group stayed in a convenient nearby (well-known chain) motel. I looked in the shower stall and there was a major roach standing in it. I put a glass over it and called the front desk to have them look at it and deal with it. The manager came and dealt with it but did not seem at all surprised to see something that large.

Up north with cold winters the biggest we get are the preying mantis. They are long and scary but not disgusting.

I have seen some jungle ones in the zoo that kept me from being a fan of tropics for years.

A Luna Moth-they are really beautiful. They are like a light creamy color green with creamy color also. They are about 4 inches high by 4 inches wide. They of course come out at night but sometimes you will find em on a wall outside when the sun comes up. I have seen them in CT. and Mass. in the country. Only have seen them a few times. Kind of rare to be able to see.

I believe the biggest actual bug I've seen was probably a giant water bug. They can be up to four centimeters long and have jaws that they can pinch you with under the water if they want, but they're not poisonous and they're mostly harmless.

Please note that the word 'bug' only refers to a certain type of insect, in the order hemiptera. You can read about them here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemiptera
Other insects (like beetles, wasps and mosquitos), along with other small arthropods including centipedes and sowbugs, are NOT true bugs. Always be careful that you define your terms properly; only say 'bug' if you actually mean the order hemiptera.

Well, actually, biggest bug, well, insect, was a Goliath Beetle when I went to visit South Africa. That bug was about 5 inches long (I measured). It was pretty kewl to hold though.
I think bugs/insects are awesome. X3
