San Francisco is a terrific city for staying in small hotels that are in very beautifully restored historical buildings. Hotel rates are steep here, like in New York, but these smaller hotels tend to be a lot more reasonable. And the benefit is a very elegant European ambience in many of them. Try, for example:

The White Swan Inn: http://www.jdvhotels.com/white_swan_inn/

Petite Auberge: http://www.jdvhotels.com/petite_auberge/

The Washington Square Inn: http://www.wsisf.com/

The Warwick Regis Hotel: http://warwicksf.com/

Good luck!

Stanford Court Hotel (corner of California and Powell) is a great place. Located in the Nob Hill area, it's close to many things and is at the intersection of cable cars going all 4 directions. Request a city view room on the 5th floor.

For your visit Union Square is probably the best place to stay. There are lots of good restaurants, shops, theaters and clubs in the Union Square area. It is centrally located easy to walk to many places, easier to get cabs, with lots of public transportation options. Driving in the city can be confusing for visitors and parking is difficult and expensive. Muni offers multi day passes that are good for buses, trolley, light rail and the cable cars [unique experience but $5 per ride].

SFjazz gave you some good hotel suggestions, many of them are Joie de Vivre Hotels.

They have several hotels in the Union Square area within your budget. Each hotel is unique and they have a cool free program where they match you with a local person, called a Golden Gate Greeter, who shares your interests to spend a few hours with you and familiarize yourself with the city.

I love the Hotel Nikko. It is right in Union Square. You can walk to shopping, interesting sites, and restaurants as well as business meetings. Very comfortable and a superbly trained staff. Try the Sake Martini in the Anzu Bar.

Wherever you stay be sure that you do not have to pay extra for parking. We stayed at the Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf and had to pay an extra $25 a day to park.
